make a baby girl gift set

September 27, 2013 By Taylor 4 Comments

baby girl gift set

I am in that time of my life in which every month I know someone having a baby, and I love it! I know new moms need “registry gifts” but when I was pregnant I really remembered the people who got me something original and different. I also had two colic-y babies who went through about 15 burp cloths, bibs and onesies a day! So, that’s my go to handmade gift. Any combination of the 3 make the perfect baby gift set, you just can’t have too many! Save the cute outfits for when they are older am I right?

Being the spit up expert that I am – I became a burp cloth connoisseur (should I add that to my resume?). Hands down the BEST BURP CLOTHS ever are the Gerber Cloth Diapers. No, Gerber does not know I’m saying this, I wish they did, but I just love them that much! They are the perfect weight, size, texture… I could go on. But a white cloth diaper is kind of boring so I always have to make them pretty.

I talked about how I make them in a previous post HERE. But it’s really simple! For these I just cut a piece of fabric a little larger than the middle section. I traced with a pencil on the wrong side of the fabric to measure the correct size. Then I used my serger and serged the edges, if you don’t have one you could just fold under to make a hem. Then I sewed them down. Easy.

I paired these with a burp cloth. I use my own template because I like them a little longer than average.

I just free-handed the initial and used wonder under with a zig-zag stitch all the way around.

Has anyone used this style of burp cloths? Trust me, if you give this at a shower, the mom will be calling you in a few months asking for more :)

Baby Bunny Plushie

April 23, 2013 By Taylor 21 Comments

Last month my friend gave birth to precious little Madi Lou. Of course I had to make her something handmade, as you know I use any excuse to make something girly :) I wanted to make a little plushie and because it was around Easter, I guess I had bunnies on the brain.
I searched for the perfect pattern but didn’t find exactly what I was looking for. I did find the “Stuffed Menswear Bunny” from my friend Martha Stewart HERE. It’s a free pattern, so I printed it out then hacked it (sorry martha). I added quite a few inches to the legs and arms.
My favorite part?… the ears. I wish I would have added interfacing so they would stick up better on their own.
I also love the little felt bow. I glued it on and sewed it on too. I wanted to make sure it would stay put if little Madi tugged at it. I also added a little taylormade tag to the butt.

I threw in a few of my favorite Burp Cloths. I posted all about those HERE.

Madi Lou also got a hand-dyed TaylorMade Onesie. You can find those in the shop HERE.

All girly and all handmade. What is better than that?

Surfer Slacks

March 31, 2013 By Taylor 2 Comments

A few weeks ago, Kate asked me if I could test out a new top secret pattern for her. It’s not so secret now, her Surfer Slacks for the Sun and Surf Collection are everywhere in sewing blogland :) It’s also no secret that I am a big fan of Kate’s work so I was all over it!

I love this pattern and whipped these up in no time. Also, if you are not BFF’s with knits- this pattern has just enough to practice on without messing anything up.

I searched for the perfect buttons for the back pockets and finally found these “C’s”.

My little model LOVES that he has “C’s” on his pants. He is between two sizes so I made them a size up so he could grow into them. Also, remember he has a big booty.

And how cute is suiting on a little boy? It’s actually a perfect fabric because it almost has a stretch to it which makes it great for climbing :)

And speaking of cute…

I think he’s over his modeling gig.

Newborn Pants + a Ship Wheel Onesie

March 10, 2013 By Taylor 5 Comments

In keeping with my boy sewing this past week, I made words tiniest & cutest outfit. What is cuter than newborn clothes? Nothing I tell you. My friend just had her 3rd baby on Thursday but it’s her 1st boy, so I knew he needed some boy clothes. I used Rae’s Free Basic Newborn Pant Pattern found HERE.

Sometimes you find a pattern that is so simple yet so fun that you want to keep making something over and over… that is this pattern. Warning, if you are having a baby anytime this year and you are my friend, spoiler alert :) I used her tutorial for “pimping them out” to add the pockets and trim around the bottom. I also added a little ribbon for the tag in the back.

For the onesie, I dyed a white one with black dye and used iron on vinyl that I cut with my silhouette. I usually include one of these handmade onesies with all of my baby gifts and I have had a few people ask about them. I put some for sale HERE in my etsy shop :)

This outfit didn’t help my baby fever. It is at an all time high :/ To make matters worse (or better) I got to hand deliver this little gift to the new baby himself. And I got an hour of newborn cuddles in return.
