5 Minute Heart Art

December 18, 2012 By Taylor 2 Comments

Remember my Gallery Wall? Well, I added a few pieces to the left so then you know what happened don’t you? I needed something on the right…obviously. Anyone who knows me knows my obsession with polka dots, especially black dots on white or cream. So when I saw this paper I knew what I had to do. Other loves include but are not limited to; hearts, squares, felt and the color green. Basically this piece of “art” (can I even call it that?) is just a piece of felt behind a square piece of paper with a shape cut into it.
I used a record frame from Ikea. (2 of the 5 minutes are taken by opening the frame)

I cut out my shape.

Taped felt to the back of the paper and put it in the frame.

Done.

Bonus points if you can spot the new pieces… the original gallery wall post can be found HERE and the DIY Hoop Art can be found HERE

In the meantime… I’m busy with my last minute Christmas Crafting that I procrastinated on. And I can’t really share many projects until they have been revealed to the new owners. (and I can’t share the boys quilts because they aren’t even close to being done! ha) Is anyone else behind?

Fall Burlap Banner

October 12, 2012 By Taylor 25 Comments

Happy Fall Y’all, My favorite season. I made this little festive Fall Banner for PSA Essentials. I used the letter stamps on cardstock, fabric, burlap and a ribbon. So easy and cute.

I stamped the letter on white cardstock.

I ripped the fabric so it would look a little more rustic.

I cut out my burlap and layered the fabric strips and cardstock on top. Then I sewed right through the paper.

Then I sandwiched the burlap flags between a ribbon.

Then I hung it up at Ampersand :) You know I love a quick project. For more ideas on how to use these stamps, visit PSA Stamp Camp Blog.

A Chevron Painting + a Video

October 8, 2012 By Taylor 12 Comments

I did a painting last week and had the bright idea to record myself painting then I could play it in fast mode and it would look really cool. Well, lets just put it this way, I wanted to post this last week because it took me 53 minutes from start to finish to paint. Then it took me five days to figure out the video. Some long nights included. Anyone who does anything with video- good job. I am not going to stick to photos because I get along a lot better with them.

I like to set “art goals” for myself and one of them is to be a messy painter. You know those people who get all crazy and messy with paint then it ends up coming out amazing, well that is not me. I am always too controlled and I tend to over work everything. When I saw Jennifer Moreman’s work, I instantly fell in love! Her work is awesome and if you can afford it you should totally own a piece of hers. I was really inspired and I thought this messy chevron painting would be perfect. I still like hers one hundred times better, but I think I did a pretty good job at not being perfect.

If you want to see just how messy I was, here is my video that took me five days to “produce” haha…

Here it is in my living room, right next to my Hippo. No, you have never seen this side of the living room before, can you blame me? Look at the embarrassing tv… and just to keep with the theme, you can also see random toys lying around and a channel changer on the coffee table. (Not picture ready – but keeping it real)

Even if you didn’t, please lie to me and tell me you watched my video haha… it was a labor of love :)

Color Washing and A Paper Mache Hippo Head

August 22, 2012 By Taylor 10 Comments

Yes you can believe it, I made a Paper Mache Hippo Head. I guess I am officially crazy now :) You know I love the whimsy. I was a little on the fence with the whole animal bust craze but when I saw the Hippo Bust at West Elm and knew I needed to get on board. Then I saw the paper mache unicorn tutorial at Lil Blue Boo and got to work. Ashley has an amazing tutorial so you can check hers out. And to be honest my hands were way too messy to attempt to take pictures during this project. Paper Mache is messy y’all!

We have lovingly named him ThomNis, which is how Finn pronounces Hippopotamus. I love how he turned out. It’s kind of hard to get a good picture- I guess ThomNis is not very photogenic.

I mounted him on a wooden plaque that I found from Joanns and wanted to keep the wood grain so it would look rustic so I used one of my favorite painting techniques: A Color Wash.

How to Color Wash:
Start with your paint, a paintbrush and a cup of water.

Put a little paint in your cup then add a little water, I mixed 3 different colors of paint. The more water you add the more see through the wash will be; showing more wood grain. Mix and add until you get a good consistency you like.
Then just paint. Mine went on really watery but as it dried the color became more vibrant.
Have you color washed anything? Also do you think I’m crazy for making a Hippo Head and hanging it in my living room? At least Ashley put her unicorn in her playroom :)
