Easy Legging Tutorial

Easy Legging Tutorial

Leggings are one of the the easiest things that I keep in my sewing arsenal! I’ve been using this method for years, first with my boys and now with my girl. The best part is you don’t need a pattern, you just need an existing pair of leggings that currently fit! Knits can be a little intimidating but all you really need is the right needle and some good quality fabric.

Easy Legging Tutorial

I had the pleasure of trying out some Charley Harper Birch Organic Knit and I can’t even explain how good this stuff is! It doesn’t even sew like a knit because it’s so soft and has such a nice rich thickness to it! Knit fabric sometimes has the tendency to slip around while you’re sewing but not this. I highly, highly recommend it… and especially this line, Maritime. You had me with clouds, fish and these amazing flamingos :) I have to get my hands on the octopus and sandling fabric to make my boys some shorts! Let’s get started on some leggings…

You will need: knit fabric (about a yard give or take depending on the size you are making), elastic, a knit needle (ballpoint needle) for your sewing machine, thread and pins, and an existing pair of leggings that fit your kiddo.

Easy Legging Tutorial

Start with your existing leggings, I like to size up when I’m making handmade clothes so they can wear it for a really long time :)

Easy Legging Tutorial

Fold the leggings and your fabric in half longways and place the leg seam of the leggings on the fold of your knit making sure to line that up.

Easy Legging Tutorial Easy Legging Tutorial

Using a pencil or a water soluble marker, add in your seam allowance and trace. I add in about 1 1/2″ for both the waistband and the bottom of the legs, and about 3/4″- 1″ on the inner seam depending on what kind of seam allowance you like. Cut out your knit.

Easy Legging Tutorial

Easy Legging Tutorial You will need to make two cuts just like this so do this same thing twice so that you have two pieces that look like this:

Easy Legging Tutorial

I like to hem up the bottom of the leggings at this point because I find the opening to be too tiny for me to make them as pretty once everything is assembled. Fold the bottom of the pants (the more narrow side) up 1/2″ then press and another 1/2″ and press down. Pin that and sew it down for both legs. I like to hem with double lines but that’s not necessary, a zig zag stitch also works well if your fabric is really tight. DON’T FORGET YOUR BALL POINT NEEDLE… PSA of the day!

Next, lay the knit pieces on top of each other, right sides together. You want to sew starting at the top where the waist is and down the curve then stop once you get to the legs.

Easy Legging Tutorial

Then turn them and lay the legs together, right sides together. Now you want to sew from one inner leg all the way around to the other inner leg matching up seams and the ends of the legs.

Easy Legging Tutorial

Easy Legging Tutorial Next, fold the waistband part under by 1 1/2″. Sew all the way around but make sure to leave a 1″-2″ opening for your elastic. I like to mark my opening so I don’t forget.

Almost done! Time to cut your elastic, measure your baby’s waist and cut the elastic to that measurement. If you add anything it will be too loose so I always cut it to the exact measurement. Once you have sewn all the way around, insert your elastic with a safety pin making sure it stays flat. Bring it out and around the other side.

Now use a zig zag stitch and sew up the elastic overlapping it by 1/2″ on both pieces.

Easy Legging Tutorial

Last step… close up that hole on the back of the waistband where we inserted the elastic.

Easy Legging Tutorial TaDa! We made leggings! Super simple right?!

Easy Legging Tutorial

Now it’s time to break in your new leggings! Baby aerobics optional :)

Infinite A-Line Dress

May 29, 2015 By Taylor 11 Comments

Hi, My name is Taylor and I’m a gingham-a-holic. I can’t get enough this summer. I spotted this light purple gingham a few months ago and I was saving it for the perfect project… well I found the perfect project! Meet your favorite new girl pattern… The Infinite A-Line Dress! Bonnie from Whisk’em is the talented designer and she emailed me a few weeks ago asking if I would participate in her Blog Tour for her first ever pattern. I have made a LOT of sewing patterns but this one is super smart y’all! I can’t even believe this is Bonnie’s first pattern.

The idea behind the pattern is that it is a jumping off point for any a-line dress that you see in a store and you can customize it to make it your own. It has three skirt choices, five sleeve options, two back options and two pocket styles! You can mix and match and use a variety of fabric. When I sew a homemade dress I make sure to size up because my kids grow super fast and I don’t want them growing out of my handmade clothes as soon as they do in store bought. Bee is just now in 18 mo clothing  so I sized up and went with the 2T making it pretty big on her. My husband even told me she looked a little prarie-esque in her baggy gingham but I love gingham so much that I’m fine with it :) I also want to say that my kids are not skinny and sometimes patterns are on the skinny side.. but this one is definitely true to size.

I took to Instagram and polled everyone about my button choice… the winner was the yellow heart button and I’m so glad cause it’s perfect.

The bodice is fully lined and Bonnie even taught me a really cool new technique (with a video that comes with the pattern) on how to attach the dress to the bodice. The pattern is for 12 mos-8 years. I went with the flutter sleeve and gathered skirt (version D) this time but I already have ideas for more… It’s calling for some pom pom trim. Thanks for having me Bonnie and congrats on a beautiful pattern!

Baby Coyote Quilt

April 15, 2015 By Taylor 13 Comments

Another Baby Quilt in the books :) I love making teeny tiny baby quilts, they are quick and easy and I don’t have time to get sick of them haha! I have a group of high school girlfriends that I have talked about here on the blog. We call ourselves the coyotes, which we made up when we were 14 so don’t judge… but one of the coyotes is having a baby and all coyote babies deserve quilts.

I was online looking for fabric and then came across the most perfect fabric that has ever been created for a coyote quilt ever!! COYOTES! Cotton and Steel to the rescue!

cotton and steel

I got a charm pack of the Cotton and Steel Mesa line then I ordered extra coyote fabric and used five solid colors for the rest of the squares. It’s so super easy… I just cut 5.5″ squares and used 1.5 yds for the back.

We don’t know if it’s a boy or a girl so I went with pink binding and a navy backing. I also went with my typical machine binding :) Hopefully coyote baby #7 loves it!!

Winged Peasant Dress

January 9, 2015 By Taylor 13 Comments

A few weeks ago, Bonnie Christine (from Going Home to Roost) sent me some fabric from her gorgeous new line, WINGED!I immediately knew it had to be a dress for my girl. Her line is with Art Gallery Fabric and they have the softest cotton ever. I got a yard of “Wingspan Melon” and the colors are even better in real life. The background color reminds me of melted ice cream :)

PicMonkey Collage

I used one of my favorite go-to patterns. The Pocket Peasant Dress from Whimsy Couture. It’s so easy, there is one pattern piece and  I can whip one up in less than 30 minutes! And I have… 4 times now :)

IMG_0102

This picture doesn’t give justice to the buttery feel of this fabric. I usually don’t wash my fabric first because my fabric usually turns into a quilt but since having a girl, I now make a lot more clothing and it’s a must!

IMG_0099

The colors are a little springy for this particular fabric in the line so I made the dress a few sizes bigger in hopes that it will fit perfectly this spring.

I can’t wait for my sweet girl to wear it. Thanks Bonnie for including me in your blog hop! Make sure to check out all of the other fabulous projects HERE!
