DIY Headboard

October 10, 2013 By Taylor 37 Comments

DIY Headboard 1

I am so excited to share this project! I thought about doing my very own DIY Headboard in our Master Bedroom years ago but I wanted to wait until we moved. So, this summer I was ready to get after it. A few weeks ago I hung some craft paper up over my naked bed and let it sit for a week or so. I traced a shape I thought I would like and wanted to live with it  for a while. I never even took a picture of this stage but here is the sad, sad room before. Note the “filing cabinet nightstand”, 10 year old mismatched lamps and the “foot board shin deathtrap”…

before pic

I made a few changes to the craft paper template, cut it out then handed it to my husband. The next step included talking my husband into building the frame and cutting the wood for me. He is a night owl so these things magically happened late at night after I was asleep. I actually woke up one morning to a finished headboard. Yes I’m very lucky, I know :) He used plywood for the main shape and used 2×4’s for the frame and the legs.

DIY Headboard

For the upholstery part I used 1″ Foam, 5 yards of quilt batting, an old sheet and 5 yards of upholstery fabric. First I had to adhere the foam to the headboard. I only put foam on the plywood part of the headboard, not the legs. I had to use two foam panels and spray adhesive directly on the plywood. IMG_6921

I waited about 30 minutes or so to make sure the spray adhesive was dry. Then I trimmed around the headboard.

DIY Headboard

I did a little research before I started and I learned that many people suggested this next step. I was originally going to layer the foam then the batting then the upholstery fabric. But the tip I found over and over was to add muslin or another layer of fabric between to achieve “total smoothness”. I took it as a sign so I went with it. I’m really glad I did, I totally see what everyone was talking about. Fabric on fabric is easier to smooth out than fabric on batting. I used an old king sized sheet and put that on the floor first then I laid my batting down.

DIY Headboard

I used 5 yards of batting and cut it in half.

IMGDIY Headboard

Make sure the sheet is pretty flat (I didn’t iron it but I should have). Then I started the fun part… stapling! My main tip is on the first side just make sure to smooth it as you go but you don’t have to pull, then on the opposite sides you have to pull really tight. I started on one side then did the top, other side and bottom last. I didn’t trim the excess fabric until I was done because in a few spots I had to remove staples and redo them.

DIY Headboard

After I went all the way around, the corners had some puckering. This is when I took out a few staples and redid them. This is also why it’s important to add the extra fabric layer because the batting catches the fabric a little.

DIY Headboard

Tada. Layer one done. I didn’t add batting to the end of the legs because we screwed the legs into the bed frame.

DIY Headboard

Here it is from the back.

THIS. FABRIC. I could die! It’s my most favorite fabric in the universe. It’s so me, made up of my very favorite colors and it makes me so happy. I saw it long ago on a chair. Then months later I started seeing it on DIY projects.  I knew this was the fabric I wanted to stare at every night and every morning. It’s called Santa Maria Desert Flower by Waverly. They now sell it online and at Hobby Lobby. Ironically you can even get a headboard (in a very similar shape) in the same fabric from Land of Nod. Unfortunately my dream fabric is only 54″ wide so I was going to have to sew a couple of seams.

DIY Headboard

I thought about doing one seam right down the middle but I am not the best at matching patterns so I decided on two side seams. Honestly this was the hardest part of the project for me. I ironed my fabric then placed it right sides together. I kept checking for accuracy making sure the pattern lined up just right.  I had to redo one side  3 or 4 times but on the other side the heavens parted and it looked perfect!

I made this fabric long enough to fully cover the legs.

I used the same technique for stapling. For the corners I stapled one side to the edge, then the other side to the edge then just pulled the fabric up to form a point and pulled it down right in the middle of the two sides and stapled. Once again, we screwed the legs to the bed frame really late at night so I didn’t take any pictures.

DIY Headboard

I have to say this is by far one of my favorite DIY Projects! I love the way it turned out. Isn’t it great when you picture something in your head and it turns out even better than you imagined? How cool that I get to sleep here :)

I ordered this bedspread almost a year ago and have been patiently waiting to put it on my new pretty bed. I made a triangle quilt pillow too because it can’t go totally pillowless. I found these amazing lamps from JC Penny. I told my husband I feel so grown up having matching nightstands and lamps, it’s the little things right?

Here is the other side. I love this dresser, we just got it from Overstock. My mom made the tree and that’s my Barrel Chair Makeover. Down the road I would love to have this one wall covered floor to ceiling with pictures and art.

DIY Headboard

I didn’t take a before picture of the previous fan but imagine it white, gold and very very squeaky… much improved! We also want to tear the carpet out one day. DIY Headboard

There is it, my favorite piece. Do you have something you have made that you just adore like me?

Make a Fabric Flower Pot

October 2, 2013 By Taylor 5 Comments

fabric flower pot

Back in 2011, one of the very first things I ever “pinned” was this. A fabric covered flower pot, which also led me to one of my favorite bloggers Ashley Ann Photography. I have thought about them for years but the main problem is that I am not a “plant person”. I am crafty and I am a mom yes, but I kill all plants. But I am trying to change that and I thought a cute pot would help.

I used my new Martha Decoupage because it’s waterproof and it’s my new obsession. I want to cover everything in it.

I cut pieces of fabric and started wrapping them around the pot. I started with decoupage underneath. The terracotta really soaks it up so I had to add a thick layer. I just folded the fabric under on the bottom of the pot.

I used 3 big sections of fabric and overlapped them so I didn’t have any folds.

It dried pretty quickly and I attempted to pot my plant which is a funny story. I bought the plant a week before potting it and I left it in my hot, Houston garage in the middle of summer for a week. My mom came over and let me know I was suffocating it. I didn’t even know that was a thing. Wish me luck keeping it alive, it already has one strike against it.

She lives in my craft room now, I have already remembered to water her :) Is anyone else not a green thumb at all?

IMG_6907

Also, (this is totally unrelated to flower pots) this month I was featured in an online publication, DIY Lifestyle Magazine! I am super excited! They are letting all of you guys have the issue for free :) If you have an iPad… Check out the September issue of the DIY Lifestyle Magazine. make a baby girl gift set

September 27, 2013 By Taylor 4 Comments

baby girl gift set

I am in that time of my life in which every month I know someone having a baby, and I love it! I know new moms need “registry gifts” but when I was pregnant I really remembered the people who got me something original and different. I also had two colic-y babies who went through about 15 burp cloths, bibs and onesies a day! So, that’s my go to handmade gift. Any combination of the 3 make the perfect baby gift set, you just can’t have too many! Save the cute outfits for when they are older am I right?

Taylor Made Baby Gift Sets from the Vault 1/2/3/4/5/6

Being the spit up expert that I am – I became a burp cloth connoisseur (should I add that to my resume?). Hands down the BEST BURP CLOTHS ever are the Gerber Cloth Diapers. No, Gerber does not know I’m saying this, I wish they did, but I just love them that much! They are the perfect weight, size, texture… I could go on. But a white cloth diaper is kind of boring so I always have to make them pretty.

handmade burpcloths

I talked about how I make them in a previous post HERE. But it’s really simple! For these I just cut a piece of fabric a little larger than the middle section. I traced with a pencil on the wrong side of the fabric to measure the correct size. Then I used my serger and serged the edges, if you don’t have one you could just fold under to make a hem. Then I sewed them down. Easy.

handmade burpcloths

I paired these with a burp cloth. I use my own template because I like them a little longer than average.

handmade bib

I just free-handed the initial and used wonder under with a zig-zag stitch all the way around.

Has anyone used this style of burp cloths? Trust me, if you give this at a shower, the mom will be calling you in a few months asking for more :)

2013 Project Life Update (January to August)

September 18, 2013 By Taylor 5 Comments

IMG_6859

I haven’t done a Project Life Update in a while so I figured I would share a few pictures today :) It’s quite clear that I am a huge Project Life Fan, it changed the way I scrapbook and I think it is something that anyone and everyone can do. Here are some of my older posts: HERE, HERE, HERE and HERE. I started Project Life in 2011 but not until August so I was playing catch up all year, then when 2012 rolled around I wanted to be current with that so I was doing two books at a time. For the first time, this year I finally caught up with one book and have only had to work on one! Another first, I’m only one month behind which is huge for me… I’m usually years behind on my scrapbooks.

I am pretty nontraditional when it comes to Project Life and that’s what I like about it. It’s so custom. Most people that I follow on Instagram or in “blogland” tend to do the weekly layout. I have never done that because my pages don’t fall like that. For example, I might only have 10 pictures from the entire month of April but then I might have 30 pictures just from one day like a birthday.

Also, I am kind of a “Project Life Kit Junkie”. Some people buy one kit and use that one the whole year. I like to buy as many as I want and then each page is different. I also started subscribing to Studio Calico’s PL Kit each month so I have a lot to choose from. I will add links for products that I love (please note some are affiliate links on Amazon)lineHere is an example of one page from an event, and I didn’t use any papers in this layout. Just pictures and snippet of the invitation. I used Photo Pocket Pages – Design B.IMG_6860

One of my new favorite plastic pages are actually not even the Becky Higgins brand (I wish she would make some) But these hold Instagrams perfectly! I order my pictures from Postal Pix which is an App right on my iPhone. Also a tip for all women… try to put as many pictures of yourself in your book, my first year I realized I am never in any pictures so I try to make a point now! I used the Square Ring Photo Sleeve Protectors.IMG_6861

IMG_6863

I got inspiration from Elise Joy and I started sewing my actual calendar pages in to an 8×10 Page protector. I sometimes add sequins in before I sew :)IMG_6865

An example of random pictures from a month. I usually have photos from events, holidays, parties etc. Then for the few pictures that don’t fit into those pages, I make them their own page. This is my favorite plastic page Photo Pocket Pages Design A ,and they are often sold out on Amazon. You can find these at Hobby Lobby now too. These papers are from the Studio Calico subscription kit.IMG_6866

Sometimes I don’t have any journaling so I just add a title right to a photo.IMG_6868

A page all about my juice cleanse, using my new favorite stamp – (similar Mason Jar Wood Stamp)IMG_6869

Another favorite plastic page is the Photo Pocket Pages – Design F. I use these for cell phone pics. I have way more cell phone pics in my albums than “real photos”. These cards are from Studio Calico and the Heather Bailey Olive Kit. IMG_6870

Another page with no journaling.IMG_6871

I am also obsessed with “Thickers”! You can get them on Amazon or you can find them at almost every craft store, Target even has them!IMG_6872

When I have a lot of photos from something but I don’t want to spread it over so many pages, I will make collages and print them to 4×6 size. This is using the plastic page “A” again. I use it most often. The papers are from the Clementine EditionIMG_6873

I use the 5 x 7 Page Protectors often for invitations, pamphlets, school pictures etc…IMG_6875

Favorite Thickers :) IMG_6877

For this little road trip, I only took my pictures with my iPhone. Also, I when I go out of town, I always look for a 4×6 postcard for my layouts. PicMonkey Collage

Another road trip post with just my iPhone. This is using the Honey Kit and these are going to be my new favorite plastic pages I can already tell! They just came out, Photo Pocket Pages – Design K. They hold 6 Instagrams and have 4 pockets for journaling or cell phone pics. IMG_6881

In August I decided to do a “day in the life” type page and I tried to take a picture every hour… kind of fun! I used PicMonkey to add the times right to the pictures.IMG_6883

I also have 2 new “toys” that I use ALL THE TIME now! After researching a ton, I decided to get the Canon SELPHY Photo Printer. I love it! It makes it so much easier when you have your quality photos right there. I will still use snapfish for my big orders but this is perfect for cell phone pictures or when I forget to order something, of if I just can’t wait for my pictures to get here :) IMG_6885

IMG_6886

And I have been looking for something to cut 3×4 pictures FOREVER! I finally found one at Hobby Lobby!IMG_6888

Also, being the “collector”  that I am I just purchased the Sunshine Kit and the Flea Market Mini Kit, can’t wait to break in to these…IMG_6912

Is anyone out there a Project Lifer? I LOVE looking at other peoples pages because I think everyone is so inspiring in their own way! Please leave a link if you have a book!
