DIY Leather Tote

March 31, 2014 By Taylor 19 Comments

DIY Leather ToteIf you are anything like me at the beginning of this project then you are scared of sewing with leather, am I right? Cause I was… I didn’t even know if my sewing machine could handle it. The Leather Hide Store asked me if I wanted to try out some leather sewing. They are a small family owned store that sells wholesale leather hides and remnants… they also work closely with the craft community! I was up for a challenge so I chose a color called “Peanut Brittle” from their remnant section. The piece received a few days later was HUGE!!

DIY Leather tote

I decided on a lined tote. Here are some “sewing with leather tips” I learned along the way:

sewing tips

diy leather tote

I started with my pattern. This is a very rough and not to scale picture of what I measured out on the wrong side of the leather. I just used a ball point pen to measure out my pattern.

bag measurements

diy tote bag IMG_8134

After tracing the pattern, I cut it all out. For the straps I cut out two pieces at 2.5″ x 32″. I like REALLY long straps so most peolple might want to shorten this.

diy tote bag

Remember not to use pins on leather. This was the hardest part for me, the leather needle actually cuts a little dot so once you make those sew lines you can’t really do it over. I used my clover clips to keep it all together. Place right sides together and sew up the sides and the bottom of the bag leaving the corners alone.

diy tote bag

I also read not to back stitch and to tie up the ends of the thread. However I back stitched in a few places and I think it did fine.

diy leather tote

Next, I closed up the corners. Do this by “smooshing” the sides together and matching the seams. diy leather tote

This was the hardest part for my machine, I had to sew to the seam then use my wheel to manually go through all the layers.

diy leather tote

At this point it should look like this… kind of bag-ish :)

diy leather tote

Now on to the lining. This part could be skipped all together because leather won’t fray. I wanted a pop of color and I needed a pocket so I decided on it. I cut two pieces at the exact same measurements as the outer bag pieces.

diy leather tote

I also made a pocket by cutting two pieces at 11″x 7″. Place pocket pieces right sides together and sew all around leaving an opening for flipping. Flip and and press so you have a double sided rectangle. Top stitch the top of the pocket. Place on your lining where ever you want. Pin and top stitch around the two sides and the bottom.

Diy leather tote IMG_8150 IMG_8151

Then I measured my phone to make a perfect little pouch for her. I just sewed up the center of the pocket making two.

diy leather tote

I also added a little taylormade tag for fun. I used my burning tool then cut some leather into an oval and sewed it to the other side of the lining.

diy leather tote

With the two lining pieces cut, do the exact same thing as you did with the leather. With right sides together, sew up sides and bottom then sew the corner.

diy leather tote

diy leather tote

You should have two bag pieces now. With right sides together place the lining part over the leather part. diy leather tote IMG_8164

Match the seams and use clips or clothespins and sew all the way around the top edge leaving an opening for flipping.

diy leather tote IMG_8167

Flip the bag right side out and push the lining into place. I usually would sew the lining down so it doesn’t show from the outside but I liked the little pop of color so I sewed it with a little lip showing. Either way top stitch all the way around.

diy leather tote IMG_8170

Lastly we have to make the straps, remember that my measurements are extra long so feel free to shorten them. I just pinched the wrong sides together and sewed leaving a few inches at the end. I marked where to stop sewing.

leather bag straps

Next, I measured 4″ from the seam of the bag and placed the straps. Then I just used a box stitch to make sure they are good and sturdy!

diy leather tote

Voila.. I sewed with leather!

Scarlett, Searsucker Shorts and a Sweetheart

February 12, 2014 By Taylor 4 Comments

searsucker shorts

I am so excited to be a part of the sewing series “Sew All 26” going on over at No Big Dill. The amazing Katy Dill is sewing outfits for her kids for each letter of the alphabet, so fun! She has been a sewing idol of mine for years so when I got an email about joining her series I ran to sign up. She is pretty much one of the coolest moms with the best style and the most original kids! Basically I want to be her when I grow up :) The “S” day fell right before Valentine’s Day so I knew I wanted to make my boy something sweet.

Meet his Valentine outfit… harder for a boy than I imagined. I came up with Scarlett, Seersucker Shorts and Sweetheart.

seersucker pants

I used a Scarlett Knit for his shirt and the Vintage V-Neck Pattern by Melly Sews. For the Sweetheart part, I just freehanded two heart arrows on to some white iron-on vinyl. I thought and thought about how to make a heart manly and this is what I came up with. I ironed them to the pocket piece before sewing them on.

boy valentine shirt

Next, I made some Seersucker Shorts, and let me say I’m a big sucker for Seersucker. I have always been a big fan and it’s also my subtle way to will the Springtime weather to show up. I used Dana’s Kid Shorts Pattern with the front pocket option. My son wears a 5T right now so I made both the shirt and shorts in a 6T so he can grow in to them a little.

seersucker shorts

My favorite part of the shorts is the Scarlett Stitching. Fun, but still boyish.

Halfway through our photoshoot he looked down and realized his arrows needed a bow. Out came the props.

And lastly, S is for Silly.

Thanks Katy for having me! I love a good excuse for some boy sewing. Check out all the other letters and their corresponding creations at No Big Dill.

Baby Boy Gift Set

February 5, 2014 By Taylor 3 Comments

baby boy gift set

Hands down, handmade baby gifts are my favorite. Moms love unique handmade gifts and I love doing quick and easy projects, it’s a win-win. Last week I went to my friend Jamie’s Baby shower for her soon to be little boy. I have a bunch of cute boy fabric so I knew I had to make him some burp cloths.

handmade burp cloths

boy burp cloths

I have talked a lot about my love for THESE cloth diapers HERE, when I made my last baby gift. I always have a pack or two on hand because they make the perfect burp cloth! Most moms contact me within a few weeks asking for more :)

I also added a few boy onesies from my Etsy Shop. Bikes and lightning bolts, you can’t go wrong there.

I wrapped them in brown craft paper and added a sticker so it looked professional :) boy gift set

Craft Room Reveal

January 20, 2014 By Taylor 29 Comments

Hi Guys. I took a little blog break over the holidays but it’s good to be back. If you follow me on Instagram (taylormadeblog) you will know I’m pregnant with baby #3, Yay! My old routine consisted of kid’s bath then kids to bed then blogging. Well now, after the kids go down, I do too. I am getting some energy back but I’m sure posts will be a little lighter while I’m pregnant and definitely once the baby gets here in June. I love having this little outlet and feeling like I have a timeline with something (even if it’s one I made up). Also, stay-at-home-mom life can get lonely sometimes and I’m thankful to have the social aspect. I’m here to stay even if that means it’s a little sporadic at times. Anyway, on to today’s post… my favorite room in the house, THE CRAFT ROOM!

craft room

When we moved in to our new house 6 months ago, the craft room was at the top of the to-do list! I was squeezed into the dining room at the old house so having an extra room for me was a must. The deal was my husband would get the whole garage if I got a craft room, DONE! The day we moved in I took some bad cell phone pictures just because I knew how pretty it would end up.

craft room before

craft room before

All I had was the big Expedit Shelf from Ikea that was staying. I got rid of everything else and continued to craft and blog from the floor for about a month or so :)

craft room before

I sketched out a VERY rough plan to get my thoughts on to paper and for my birthday this past summer my husband built me world’s best craft room. These are the actual dimensions for everything he built. He built the two side desks, the big center work table and the 4 shelves. I ordered the hairpin legs online for the side desks.

craft room plans

He finished the furniture months ago but I wanted to wait for it to be “finished” before I posted about it. I realized a few weeks ago that it will never be finished so I am going to share where it’s at now. Eventually I want recessed lighting, wood floors, new curtains, new chairs and a way to hide those ugly cords. But today here she is…

craft room

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this room! It is by far my favorite room in the house! It’s bright, happy and inspiring. We have a living room and a dining room so this is the “formal living”. It also happens to be the first room you see when you walk through the front door. I was originally torn because we have an extra bedroom in the back and I debated between the craft room vs. the playroom being up front. We decided that I could keep a craft room more organized on a daily basis than a playroom. I’m so happy with our decision because the playroom is a disaster area everyday, as it should be. Also, most people come through our garage so that puts this room in the back.

craft room

craft room

The best thing is the huge beast of a work table that Bryan built! It’s so sturdy that I can stand on it to take overhead pictures.

craft room

One issue was that this room had no lighting. Zero. Great natural light but not so good at night. We want to add recessed lighting one day but for now, my mom got me these fun lights for my birthday. I strung them up one afternoon which was both mind boggling to get the sway right and also a very intense workout because I went up and down a 20 ft ladder about 700 times. The light is a little too yellow but they work for now.

craft room

craft room

Everyone always asks about this spinner on the work table. It was a display when we had our store and when we closed my mom and I each kept one, it’s perfect for craft supplies.

craft room

I wanted a clean white look so when we moved I bought these white containers from IKEA. They hold everything! It’s all very organized in there and surprisingly I know where everything is without having to label them. Everything from glue guns, felt, paints, scrapbook paper and stamps to bins for unfinished projects, fabric scraps, batting and my iron are all hiding in there. On the very right side I kept my fabric around comic book board system. The only fabric on the boards are 1/2yd – 1yd. If it is larger or smaller it lives in the pink bins on top.

craft room

I have the two desks split up by sewing and fabric crafts on the right and computer and paper crafts on the left. This is the right desk. I have my sewing machine, serger and my Photo Printer (canon selphy). I also whipped these fabric hoops up very quickly one evening and I love them! That bottom Heather Bailey is my all time favorite fabric.

craft room

On the shelf above the sewing machines, I have a basket for my current sewing project. I also have some project life cards that I’m working on right now. On top I have some magazine boxes that hold sewing patterns and some buttons/bakers twine.

craft room

craft room

Behind the sewing side I have a little work station. I have most of my sewing notions and tools in the drawers. I got both the white Alex drawers and the Cart from Ikea. On top I have a lot of scrapbooking stuff like stickers and embellishments. I made the chalkboard HERE. I also have a scale and packing stuff here for when I sell stuff from my etsy shop. I keep chalk and business cards in the little hanging basket. Mini Dresden is from Inside the Paper Box.

craft room

craft room

craft room

On to the paper craft and computer side. I keep my new embroidery machine and the silhouette over here because they have to be connected to the computer.

craft room

craft room

The first thing I made for this room was the fabric garland and I still love it. I want to make about 100 more. Also I begged for this Freshly Picked mouse pad and got it for my birthday.

craft room

I have my Project Life Card Holder on the shelf by my copic markers and one of my many Katie Daisy prints. On the top shelf I have my silhouette (dust cover pattern HERE) and the little boxes are full of the stamps I use most often. I made the top painting HERE and the print is from Gus and Lula.

craft room

craft room

That pretty much wraps her up :) Like I said, it is a work in progress. I am not sure that union jack painting is perfect there. Also the cords are still driving me crazy, any tips on how to hide them? I am craft room obsessed so if you have a craft room leave a link in the comments so I can check it out. If I left anything ask feel free to ask where I got something!

DIY Ornament Party

December 16, 2013 By Taylor Leave a Comment

Remember last year when I hosted the first DIY Ornament Party? Well, my friends (the coyotes) had so much fun they insisted on round two ;)

paint dripped ornaments

I kept it simple like last year. I made an appetizer and I asked each girl to bring one too. I also made a dessert and had wine. We meet once a month and we usually have a meal but for this, it’s easier to just have snacks since there is crafting to be done!

For the ornaments I got a pack of clear glass bulbs. Then I set out a bunch of different paint colors and some paint brushes and sponges. At each spot I placed a few paper towels, some water and I used a plastic Tupperware lid for our paint palettes.

diy ornament party

Some of us painted on the outside and some on the inside. I did the “squeeze paint into the ornament” method.

diy ornament party

They all turned out so pretty and obviously we had fun too!

After they dried overnight I wrote the year on the outside with sharpie. This is what I ended up with…

So, has anyone hosted a make your own ornament party? I am going to need some more ideas as I see this is becoming an annual thing :)

Triangle Baby Quilt

November 20, 2013 By Taylor 21 Comments

triangle baby quilt

Triangle quilts are all the rage this year so I knew I had to make one for my friend. She isn’t finding out the sex of her baby which I am a big fan of, I was surprised both times too. It adds so much excitement but it can be hard to pick out a gift. I love making baby gifts and I feel like a quilt is the perfect unisex present. I went with a range of colors and even though I added two pinks I made sure to add more blues just in case. But either way- it’s a baby and a little pink on a quilt is OK for a boy in my opinion :)

baby triangle quilt

For the front I used 11 different solid cottons, 1/4 yard of each color. Then I used 1 1/2 yards for both the batting and the back. I made a quilted triangle pillow a few months ago and I cut out all the triangles by measuring. So this time bought a handy little triangle ruler. The template I was using was about 7 1/2″ on every side. I didn’t realize that the flat top on the template was for another quilt pattern and all of my triangles were cut incorrectly. Bummer but since they were all consistently wrong I just went with it.

After I cut all of the triangles out I placed them in stacks. I laid the quilt out in a random pattern and I made sure no color was touching the same color. Then I sewed the triangles together horizontally making rows. I ended up cutting about 115 triangles but only used 8 rows of 12 triangles… so 96 total.

triangle baby quilt

Then I sewed each row together vertically. Because of the flat tops on the triangles it made them more of a trapezoid shape, which turned out OK it just made the quilting part a little different. I placed the back fabric right side down, then the batting then the top. I used very thick and fluffy batting because I thought it would make a perfect “play-on-the-floor-tummy-time-quilt”. Then I placed the quilt on top, right side up. Here is a very rough diagram of how I quilted the whole thing.

triangle baby quilt

I started with 1 and sewed horizontally all the way across each line. The diagram just shows 4 lines but I actually did all the the horizontal lines down the full length of the quilt. After I was done with that I started the zig-zag quilting. Because of the trapezoid shape I wasn’t able to just make diagonal lines. I actually started in the middle and did that zig-zag pattern down each “line”. This made it look like every “triangle” was separate, which I loved!

baby triangle quilt

baby triangle quilt

I just used some white cotton that I already had lying around for the binding so I’m not really sure how much I used. The quilt ended up to be 42″ x 52″ so that will give you an idea for the length of the binding.  Also, The day I went out and took pictures I got some awesome sun-flares… Baby Quilt Magic :)

baby triangle quilt

IMG_7302

Before I quilted everything I added this little TaylorMade tag to one of the triangles. triangle baby quilt

triangle baby quilt

I honestly thought about keeping it for myself because I loved it so much. I guess that makes a good gift, if you want to keep it! Now I just need to make one in my size.

Fox Costume

October 30, 2013 By Taylor 14 Comments

Meet the Fox! fox costume

When my oldest son decided he wanted to be a skunk for Halloween, I had no other choice but to dress his brother in a fox costume. The cutest little fox I’ve ever seen.fox costume

I had a hard time finding fabric that was the right shade of “orangey/brown”. I looked and looked but then I found this heathered burnt orange t-shirt in the men’s section at Wal-Mart. I bought two XXL shirts and took them to the cutting table. I used my new favorite pattern again, The Bimaa Sweater for the top. I sewed strips of brown knit to the bottom of the orange before cutting the pattern. And I added the ears before sewing the sections of the hoodie. I used interfacing in the ears but I also did a little extra step to get them to stand up. After the hoodie was sewn, I flattened the ear down and sewed a few stitches right on top. Then I bent the ear back the other way and put a few stitches on the inside of the ear too. They stand up really well now!

fox costume

fox costume

fox costume

For the pants, I used the Fancy Pants Leggings Pattern from Tichy Threads. Another very easy and very satisfying pattern! I used the same method and sewed brown fabric to the orange before cutting out the pattern. fox costume

fox costume

The tail. The cutest little tail ever. It’s just stuffed and sewn right on to an elastic belt that sits under the shirt.

fox costume

fox costume

I love that he can wear the top as a shirt later on. My kids love play clothes so I don’t think this week will be the last time I see it :) I also want to make more Fancy Pants Leggings. This kid has a big butt and this pattern fits him great. To say they are excited is an understatement!

fox costume

And just in case you don’t have the song in your head yet…

Be sure to check out his brothers Skunk Costume too. How many more years do I have left for “themed costumes”?

Skunk Costume

October 29, 2013 By Taylor 15 Comments

skunk costume

A few months ago we were  in the car and my oldest announced that he wanted to be a skunk for Halloween. Kind of awesome and pretty random. But I just knew he would change his mind. Then a few weeks later he asked if I made his skunk costume yet (smart boy). He is very in to super heroes so I was still thinking he would change his mind, but then on a trip to Joann’s, he pointed out fabric that would make a good skunk costume. I guess he was serious.

skunk costume

First, I bought a black long sleeved shirt and some black pants. Then I got some back and white fur and thought about how it would all come together. But I spotted this post from Ari where she used Sarah’s Bimaa Pattern to make a Viking Hoodie for her adorable son. Both of these ladies are super talented InstaGram friends of mine :) I knew it would be the perfect skunk head. I already had the shirt so instead of making a new one, I just did a little hacking!

skunk costume

I used the pattern for the hoodie part. I added my little skunk ears before sewing the panels together. Then I used the Bimaa pattern to make a new neckline so the hoodie and shirt would match up correctly. Yall, this pattern is awesome!

PicMonkey Collage5

I cut a strip from the white fur and sewed a hem around all four sides, that fur is messy business. I pinned it right down the middle and sewed it directly on the shirt (before I added the hoodie).

skunk costume

For the tail I used the fur, batting and a clothes hanger so it stands up! I just used a piece of elastic for the band around the waist and that is what the tail is sewn to.

skunk costume

skunk costume

The best thing is this costume is really comfortable. It’s soft and cozy and I had to bribe him to take it off after out photo shoot!

skunk costume

So there you have the skunk. I love how it turned out! Stay tuned tomorrow for his brother’s costume reveal, it’s another woodland creature… any guesses?

The Boys Shared Room

October 24, 2013 By Taylor 10 Comments

boys shared room

shared boys room

When we moved this summer, the boys really showed an interest in sharing a room. I loved the idea but was tentative because I didn’t know how well it would work. They are 18 months apart but one is a night owl and one is an early bird. My youngest had just started climbing out of his crib when we moved so it was a good time for a big switch anyway. I figured it would make them feel more cozy and on hard days it would teach them about sharing and compromising. It’s been a little over 4 months and its going great! I love knowing that they are together. The funny thing is that we moved from a house half the size and now they want to share, go figure! In the adjoining room (connected by a bathroom) we have the playroom. That means their bedroom houses just two beds, and their clothes.

For the first few weeks, I didn’t have a game plan. My oldest was sleeping on a borrowed bed and my youngest was done with his crib so we went and bought two twin mattress’s and then I froze…  it was bad. IMG_6351

We had the mattress on the floor and an old, broken, garage sale dresser to hold the clothes… so pretty much it looked like a frat house for toddlers.

IMG_6352

I googled and pinned fun “shared room” ideas but with the configuration of this room; none of those were going to work. My husband wanted bunk beds but I thought they are too little (not to mention they are hard to make). Then it happened… I found them. Two vintage, wicker headboards painted red.

shared boys room

We already had the quilts, curtains and the world map tapestry. I found the grey striped sheets from target. We had the kids bedrooms painted white when we moved in to brighten it up.

shared boys room

It unintentionally started going a little sailor/nautical/mapish… which I love!

shared boys room

Like I said I used a lot that I had. But I bought a few things for the walls that I loved…

This “dream big little one” growth chart  is from Gus and Lula (zulily deals)

shared boys room

This Sailor Print is from Urban Outfitters (also where the map tapestry is from). The other framed piece is from a shopping bag and I just cut off the handles.

shared boys room

Chalkboard Map Print is from the Caravan Shoppe. This dresser was my husband’s when he was a baby :) I want some wood in there but I don’t know if we should stain it, or maybe even paint the handles?? Any ideas?

boys shared room

shared boys room

It’s still a work in progress like the rest of the house! But it sure beats two mattress on the ground (which I have a feeling the boys didn’t mind as much as I did!) Do your kids share a room? Also, any thoughts on the dresser; what would you do?

Project Life Card Holder

October 22, 2013 By Taylor 49 Comments

Project Life Card Holder

A few months ago I was playing on Instagram and looking at the hash tag #craftroom because it’s just plain fun. I came across an awesome Project Lifer, Miriam and her pretty feed. I looked back through her photos and fell in love with her Project Life Organizer! My husband is really handy so I started drawing up some plans.  Spoiler Alert: he built it and it’s amazing!!!

project life organization

The one I saw on Miriam’s Blog is a lot larger but mine has to fit on a shelf so I had to keep the size down. I gave my husband the dimensions and this weekend he went to work! Mine is 30″ long and 9 1/2″ deep.

project life organizer

My husband even made risers in each section so my cards have stadium seating. He glued and nailed the dividers in and I sprayed it white.  In other news I need to stop buying Project Life Kits :/

project life organizer

project life organizer

I have been using the plastic trays that the kits come in so the cards stand up. I find it SO much easier to use something if it’s already out. Not only are they handy but now they are even prettier in my new holder! When people walk in to my craft room they always say “what are these pretty papers?!” They are their own decoration :)

Thanks Bryan for building me the best Project Life Holder Ever!
