Triangle Baby Quilt

September 7, 2017 By Taylor 2 Comments

Triangle Baby QuiltGuess what… I have a new job title. I am an AUNT!!! I’m new to the job, but just to make sure I’m the best Aunt around I started with a quilt, because you can never go wrong with a quilt!

Triangle Baby Quilt

Triangle Baby QuiltMy sister didn’t want to find out the gender of her baby so I had to keep the quilt gender neutral. To me that just means “all the colors” haha! She also casually mentioned that she liked the triangle quilt I made for my friend’s baby a few years ago HERE. Triangles in solids are easy but I wanted to make it a little different.

Triangle Baby Quilt

Triangle Baby QuiltInstead of equilateral triangles I measured out 6″ squares and cut them in half down the diagonal. I chose 18 colors of Kona Cotton and bought 1/2 yard in each color. That was way overkill because I have tons of fabric left over and could probably make 5 more quilts just like this haha! I think thats a good problem to have :) Then I made a huge stack of triangles in random order and sewed them back together down the diagonal to form 6″ squares again. I did use a 1/4″ seam allowance for that so the square was a little smaller. I just made sure not to have two of the same color touch.

Triangle Baby QuiltThen after I had 6 (ish) inch squares I just arranged them in rows. I didn’t want a pattern so again I laid it out randomly trying not to let any of the same color touch. I did 11 squares by 11 squares. It’s a pretty big quilt, almost lap size for the couch. It ended up 60″ x 60″ which I love! I wanted something a little bigger because she had so many swaddles and smaller blankets. This way they can cuddle together or she can lay it out on the ground for playing!

Triangle Baby Quilt

Triangle Baby QuiltFor the back I wanted something still gender neutral and I also wanted something with animals. Her nursery has a subtle animal theme going on and I wanted to tie it in. I had it narrowed down to a few then found the Sloths by Dear Stella. It couldn’t be more prefect! HERE is the link to the sloth fabric.

This is the second quilt I have finished that I used spray basting and I am OBSESSED… Totally hooked, I can never go back haha! I use this one HERE; love love love it!! That brings my 100% finished by me quilt total to 10… I also have 5 quilt tops that are done, sitting in a basket but we don’t need to talk about those now do we ;)

Sweethearts Quilt with Wonderland

January 4, 2017 By Taylor Leave a Comment

Sweethearts QuiltHappy New Year! I am so excited to be sharing today’s project with you!! This makes quilt NUMBER 9 totally handmade and completed by me. Emphasis on completed because I also have 4 quilt tops finished with no backs so those don’t count yet haha.

Sweethearts QuiltThis gorgeous fabric is the latest line, Wonderland, from Emily Isabella for Birch Organics. I went to Houston Quilt Market back in October and I absolutely fell in love with the line that, at the time, was about to be released. I actually gasped when I saw it, the colors were so prefect together but a little unexpected. I just knew I had to have it but I wanted to have all of the fabrics from the line together so I had to do a quilt. Fabricworm sent me this gorgeous set of Wonderland fat quarters then a little extra for the binding in Bows Blue (which is the prettiest color of blue) and enough for a few extra hearts in my favorite prints (like Croquet)!

Sweethearts Quilt

Sweethearts Quilt Last year when I finished quilt number 8 I decided I should try to somehow start adding the date on my quilts. Wouldn’t it be so fun for my kids kids to look at the year and think how long ago this is?! I used my embroidery machine and added a little message on one of the heart blocks.

Sweethearts QuiltThis isn’t the first time I had a love at first sight moment with an Emily Isabella line! Remember my love for the Homestead Line by Emily (pictured HERE on Bee’s Piggy Dress in Oink). I still love that entire line and I’m actually still hoarding a little bit of it. Like I said, my quilting skills are improving but I’m still pretty basic so I usually “stitch in the ditch” for my quilting. This time I actually broke out my Free Motion Foot and did some freehand wavy lines.

Sweethearts Quilt

Sweethearts QuiltI thought about making this for my daughter for Christmas but then I remembered a precious quilt pattern, The Sweethearts Quilt, with heart blocks and decided on a Valentines Day Quilt! I have been sewing for years but I wouldn’t call myself a quilter, I usually stick to triangles, rectangles or square blocks :) So, this pattern was a little challenging for me in the best way. It still uses triangles and rectangles just more of them and they worked together to build the hearts. I was so proud of each block that I would rush into the living room… “LOOK WHAT I MADE!” and my family agreed that this is their favorite quilt yet so maybe there is something to this little challenge! This fabulous pattern is the Sweethearts Quilt Pattern for Cloud 9 and I highly recommend it! The pattern and tutorial are free and its super east to follow.

Sweethearts Quilt I found this back fabric at Joanns and I don’t even know what it is called, it has a texture almost like a seersucker but more square and larger. I love it and it is perfect for a thin and cool quilt backing.

Sweethearts Quilt I love how this gorgeous quilt turned out and I really hope I did the pretty fabric justice. Thank you so much Fabricworm for providing the fabric for this project!

Ombré Baby Quilt

September 2, 2016 By Taylor 8 Comments

ombre baby quiltombre baby quiltAnother quilt is in the books. An Ombre Baby Quilt to be exact :)  I tried to count and I think from start to finish, totally handmade this is quilt number 8… I have 4 more quilt tops ready to go but those don’t count haha. Another one of the Coyote girls had a baby… also bringing our number to 8 Cubs. It’s a tradition for all of the Cubs to get a blanket or quilt made by me!

ombre baby quilt

ombre baby quiltI wanted really big squares for this quilt and thought about doing a rainbow ombre but when I started looking around I just fell in love with the blues and greens. I have never used a precut fabric stack before but let me tell you I might have been converted. It makes it so easy. I bought THIS Kona Solids Layer Cake. The colors and the fabric are amazing.

To be honest, I should have probably quilted it closer together but I just love how big the squares are so I didn’t want to distract from that. I do have a few puckers in a few spots but thats the beauty of a handmade quilt right? “Real” quilters are amazing and talented and I will stay in the quilter wanna be category until I get a little more prefect… until then I will give all the babies my imperfect quilts!

ombre baby quilt

I used a a white cotton fabric on the back that had flocked little polkadots… so cute! I was trying to venture out past my white or black and white striped binding but the white looked too pretty, maybe next time. I also added a little TaylorMade tag :)

Vintage Sheet Quilt

January 8, 2016 By Taylor 5 Comments

vintage sheet quilt

The first moment I saw a vintage sheet quilt years ago, I knew I had to make one! The pastel colors mixed with the jewel tones… I can’t even handle it. So a few years ago, I started collecting vintage sheets from sales that I saw on Instagram, Etsy and eBay. I bought some full sheets for the back and binding by mostly just fat quarter cuts of sheets that people had split up.

Once I felt like I had enough, I decided on just doing 4″ squares so I could still see as much of the design as possible. I cut the squares and finished the top back in 2014… here we are in 2016, slowest quilt ever haha.

vintage sheet quilt

Even if it took two years, I’m done and I love it! It’s larger than a twin but smaller than a full. The perfect size in my opinion. I didn’t have any rhyme or reason to where I placed the squares. Then I learned that random is sometimes harder because I didn’t want any two of the same pattern touching… so that took some maneuvering.

vintage sheet quilt

I used very thin cotton batting because, it’s Texas y’all… it doesn’t get that cold here. Speaking of Texas, I love the way the quilt looks in this field behind our house… there is literally a woman walking a cow in the background if you look really closely haha!

I’m a terrible machine quilter because I’m not a big perfectionist and when I start running out of steam or get bored I just hurry through… so don’t look too closely at the top quilting on this. I did every other row right down the center, and I love the way that turned out too. A little different than my stitch in the ditch method. I used a full sheet for the back so I didn’t have to worry about the seams. And speaking of not being a perfectionist, I machine quilted my binding on too. This was actually the only “non-sheet” fabric on the quilt. I found it at Walmart of all places but it has a funky 70’s vibe and dark colors so I thought it would outline it perfectly.

Overall, this quilt was super simple to make and I should have finished it years ago (literally). I barely had the last stitch in it and the boys were dragging it to the couch :) We all fight over THIS ONE so now we have two to argue over haha. Also… big shout out to my husband who stood in a field holding up a pastel quilt while cars drove by during 5:00 traffic, he’s a keeper.
