Built in Bunkbeds

September 24, 2017 By Taylor 8 Comments

built in bunk beds

It’s room reveal day! I have been waiting for this post for almost a year so please excuse the one million photos :) I’m just so excited for the boy’s new built in bunkbeds!!

built in bunkbeds

When we moved into our house the boys decided they wanted to share a room but I wasn’t sure how long that would last. So, I found some (temporary) red wicker headboards on craigslist and we just attached them to a metal bed frame and that worked for a few years. Last year around this time I realized that the boys still love sharing a room and that they were getting a little too “strong” for flimsy headboards attached to a cheap metal bad frame via zip tie haha! I started researching bunkbeds but my husband is the type who doesn’t think anything is sturdy enough so he said he should build them… umm ok! Here is the before:

We repainted their room to match the rest of the house because I just can’t get sick of this color. It’s Colonnade Grey by Sherwin Williams and it is in every other room but two in the entire house! It is considered a greige but its definitely on the grey side with just a little warm hint.

I found several inspiration bunk beds on Pinterest and pinned those HERE. I showed Bryan a few of the photos and we took things we liked about several of them and added some things that were our own too. Bryan started with the frame and had to finish that part quickly because the boys needed to actually sleep in there haha! We did it over the summer so they crashed on the couch for about a week or so!

I know I have bragged on my husband in the past for his amazing woodworking skills but these are unreal! The house could blow over but these would still be standing ha! They are attached the whole way to the wall and built from floor to ceiling. My favorite things… the built in shelves in the bottom bunk and the mini staircase! There is also a pull out trundle.

I will link all sources at the end of the post but I found the flag from Amazon and this metal grey bookshelf is from IKEA. I was trying to go boyish… but more of a grown up boy. My kids are 6 and 8 right now which is kind of a weird in between stage. Some things are way too “baby” for them and that just wouldn’t be cool now would it :) I also don’t want to rush them into an adult room so I hope this is a happy middle ground.

With the room remodel we got them Beddy’s Bedding. If you have bunk beds you pretty much need this bedding! It’s kind of like a sleeping bag, a comforter and a fitted sheet had a baby! The entire thing zips up and fits around the mattress so in the morning when it’s time to make the bed all they have to do is zip up the sides. We went with the “simply white” for a few reasons. Firstly, I love everything white because it looks clean and I can bleach it. Secondly, Beddy’s only option at the time for all cotton was the white. Most of the interiors are minky, which sounds super cozy but just too warm for us down here in Houston. I think they now make a grey option for the cotton interior too. I was a little nervous about so much white but I’m actually so happy about it. Anyway, I HIGHLY recommend them for bunk beds or even just for kids learning to make the bed. The quality is amazing, the are so soft and have a great weight to them (and I’m picky about that :). They boys love them and so do I…. win/win.

My oldest is on top and the railing is very high so it would be impossible to fall out, which makes my nervous moms side feel better. We still need to move the fan, it comes about a foot away from the edge of the bed which is just a little close for comfort but it is so cozy up there!

On the opposite side of the bed they have their dresser also from IKEA. This is also where the pet hermit crabs live :) ! We went to Florida this summer and what trip to Florida is complete without a hermit crab souvenir?!

I love these posters I found from GroopDealz (about a year ago)! They were so affordable and the colors are perfect, I found the frames from where else??… amazon.

The boys use the corner basket for extra blankets (and tent building :) The plant hangers are from amazon and we had to do faux plants in there because let’s be honest… between two little humans and four hermit crabs my “living thing” quote is maxed out in the room! I found this fun splatter fabric from IKEA and just used hot glue to attach some green pom pom trim.

If you know me you know I don’t really do neutrals but for some reason I just kept buying black and white for this room… what is happening to me?! Love these buffalo check pillows I found on Amazon. The graphic word pillows are from Target.

I found the handles for the trundle on Amazon. I just love the trundle, can’t wait for boy sleepover fun to happen in there :)

To say they boys are obsessed is an understatement. Bryan truly built an amazing piece of furniture and I’m sure the boys will make amazing memories in here! I am going to link as many things as I can remember at the end of this post but let me know if you have any questions!

DIY Bar Cart & How to Stock it

July 19, 2016 By Taylor Leave a Comment

DIY Bar CartDIY Bar CartGuess what has been on my to do list forever… a Bar Cart! Of course we couldn’t just buy one, my husband is the king of “we can make that for less” and I just like to be crafty :) I showed him the picture of the one I liked and drew up some dimensions and he worked his magic. Before you get too jealous please note that my husband is a perfectionist so projects usually take time haha. But, he started this right before Bee’s Farmers Market Birthday Party (post coming soon!) so he actually had a deadline and we made it work. He used angle iron for the corners and connected the shelves together that way. He also picked the casters out himself… bonus points! The great thing about him building it is that I had some pretty specific dimensions because it needed to fit two different walls. There is a spot I had in mind to put it when we have people over and we are using it, then a spot that it will live and look cute. Both equally important ha!

DIY Bar Cart

DIY Bar CartHere it is in the Dining Room where it will live! Speaking of looking cute, after Bryan finished it and the paint was dry I was able to do my favorite thing… style the Bar Cart!  Uncommon Goods asked if they could send some stuff so I could pretty it up and of course I accepted because everything they have is so quirky and cool. Each product has a unique design story and most of their products are Made in the USA, always using sustainable and eco-friendly practices. Uncommon Goods carries unique jewelry, designer décor, tabletop items, and handcrafted gifts created in harmony with the environment without harm to animals or people. I’m pretty much obsessed with everything I received, can you even handle the pineapple tumblers?! When I opened the box I actually gasped because the box and packaging were so pretty. Here in the south Pineapples stand for  hospitality and friendship… how cute would these be for a housewarming gift?!

DIY Bar Cart

DIY Bar CartI wanted the Bar Cart to be cute and functional but let’s be honest, I do have three kids running around our house. They are all pretty good about staying out of the “grown up rooms” but just incase I wanted to style it with mixers and bar tools vs. actual alcohol lying around. I added a pitcher, the pineapple tumblers, some copper mugs and a cocktail shaker then some fun mixers like Topo Chico and La Croix. You can’t forget some cute drink cocktail picks and shot glasses. I am a huge tequila fan and a super cold shot is the key… if you haven’t tried soapstone shot glasses you need to get on board, they actually hurt to hold for too long they are that cold! I love this little rustic holder.

DIY Bar Cart

DIY Bar CartDIY Bar CartI like to keep a basket filled with adorable cocktail napkins that I have collected out when we are using it for drinks but I can’t leave those out with my kids… the glass they totally ignore but the napkins they love… go figure haha! I have found a ton of cute ones at local party stores and I found these watermelons bed naps on Etsy.

DIY Bar Cart

DIY Bar CartUncommon Goods also sent me this fun Animal Tracks Art Print. It is so perfect above the bar cart, it ties the modern quirkiness of the cart with the Green Buffet on the other wall and my new table runner. I’m obsessed with the wooden rails and my kids are in love with it too because the animal tracks are actual size so they stand under it and compare :)

DIY Bar CartThe Watercolor Table Runner is everything! It’s not only perfect in this room but it’s across from the craft room so it’s just so me. My mom and sister came over and said I love this rummer with the paint can lids, which I can totally see. Either way its quirky and colorful and crafty so its made for us!

DIY TeePee with Forest Fables Fabric

December 9, 2015 By Taylor 33 Comments

Bohemian TeePee with Forest Fables Fabric Bohemian TeePee with Forest Fables Fabric

I have had a DIY TeePee on my to-make list for years now! When Meaghan and Lindsay of Hawthorne Threads asked me to participate in a Blog Hop for their new in-house fabric line Forest Fables, of course I said yes. We bounced around a few ideas and then I remembered my TeePee idea and everyone was excited!

Bohemian TeePee with Forest Fables Fabric

DIY TeePee with Forest Fables Fabric

I have followed Hawthorne Threads for years so I knew they sold designer fabric but I really had no idea that they had so many of their own fabric lines that they printed themselves! The best part is they print the fabric to order so they never run out :) When I received the fabric it felt different than usual quilting cotton, they sent a note about washing and about using a finer needle since their thread count is so high. I always prewash when making clothing but this TeePee won’t ever be washed so I worked with it how it was, which was awesome since the fabric is somewhat stiff after printing.

Bohemian TeePee with Forest Fables Fabric

Their newest line, Forest Fables was inspired by the classic tales of “Three Billy Goats Gruff” and “Chicken Little”, as well as handcrafted embroidery and paper cutting. As soon as I read that I was all in haha! I love the blush and mustard colors in the Harvest Palette. I obviously had to go with the Folk Tails for the main body and I accented with Floral Stitch for the door.

DIY TeePee with Forest Fables Fabric

I did a little bit of “DIY TeePee Research” and it seemed like all the ones that I found online that I like originated from this one HERE. The tutorial is great and worked perfectly for me! I love when I don’t have to reinvent the wheel :) I was inspired by a few solid lace TeePees I have seen in blogland so I wanted to incorporate some lace in mine too. I traced out a pattern piece for the panels that I found in the tutorial but I just hacked it on the top part. I cut fabric panels of the bottom pattern piece and lace panels for the top (don’t forget seam allowances on both pieces). Then I sewed them together, ironed the lace toward the fabric side and top stitched. From there I could just follow the original tutorial just the same.

I was originally going to make my own bias tape but I had been hoarding that gold tape for almost a year and this project seemed perfect!

Lastly, I added some “Bohemian Flair” to the top. I wrapped yarn around the top and attached it with hot glue.

I used some more fabric from the line and a scrap of gold that I had to make some hanging embroidery hoops. I also did a little fabric bunting out of long scraps that I had.

We basically all (the kids and I) love it! And the fabric couldn’t be more perfect! Let me know if you have any other questions about the TeePee! But now for the best part…

Mid Century Dresser Makeover

September 14, 2015 By Taylor Leave a Comment

mid century buffet

We are still settling in to our newly remolded kitchen (follow along on instagram @taylormadecreates). So, in the meantime I have a few things I’ve been meaning to post. Like this dresser that I finished in January, at least I’m posting it in the same year right haha?! This dresser started out off-white with gold “speckles” on it, not really my style. But… I know good bones when I see them. I had been searching online for the perfect buffet with the right pop of color for our dining room. My dad had a friend getting rid of it and thought I might like it… he was right! I know it would be the perfect DIY for our space.

I sanded it down a little and cleaned it but the real star of the show is the paint I used. I went with Luscious Green by Valspar that I got at Lowes. I also bought a decent brush which I don’t usually do. Here is a super non-glamourous cell phone progress pic. I did two good coats then touched up ares that needed it with a third coat. The paint was amazing and covered really well without having to use too much. This was my first time using this paint and- no this post isn’t sponsored by them at all, I just really liked this paint!

I unscrewed the hardware and thought about replacing it but ended up spraying it gold and loving it! It didn’t take long to dry but I just left it in the garage overnight and then brought her in the next. She’s SO perfect for our dining room under the plate wall.
